PCR HCV GENOTYPING
₹7,000
The PCR HCV genotyping test identifies the specific genotype (1–6) and subtype of hepatitis C virus in a person with confirmed active infection (detectable HCV RNA).
In India, genotype 3 is most common, followed by genotype 1.
Genotyping helps doctors choose the most effective antiviral regimen and treatment duration. Genotype 3, especially with cirrhosis, can be harder to treat and may need modified therapy. It also helps distinguish relapse from reinfection after treatment.
With modern pangenotypic drugs, it remains useful in complex cases.
You should get a PCR HCV genotyping test after active hepatitis C infection is confirmed by a positive HCV RNA test, and before starting antiviral treatment. It is especially useful if you have cirrhosis, previous treatment failure, or suspected reinfection, or when your doctor plans a genotype-specific treatment.
No special preparation or fasting is required for a PCR HCV genotyping test. Give your sample before starting antiviral treatment, as the test needs a detectable viral load. Bring your recent HCV RNA (viral load) report, and inform your doctor about any past hepatitis C treatment or medicines you take.
No, fasting is not required for a PCR HCV genotyping test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, and the test can be done at any time of day. However, the sample should be taken before starting antiviral treatment, because the test needs a detectable viral load.
