What your 2D Echo checks

Five things your doctor reads from one painless scan.

  1. Heart pumping strength (EF)

How much blood your heart pushes out with each beat. A normal ejection fraction is about 55–70%.

  2. Valve function

Whether the four valves open fully and close tightly, without narrowing or leaking.

  3. Chamber size

Whether any of the four chambers of the heart is enlarged.

  4. Wall movement

How the heart muscle moves with each beat. A patch that moves poorly can point to earlier damage.

  5. Colour Doppler blood flow

The direction and speed of blood through the heart, shown in colour, to pick up leaking or narrowed valves.

What is a 2D Echo Test?

A 2D echocardiogram uses sound waves to create live moving images of your heart. It shows how well your heart pumps and whether the valves and chambers work normally.

It is a non-invasive ultrasound, so there is no radiation, no injection and no pain. Doctors also use it to keep watch on heart disease and on how well treatment is working.

Ejection fraction (EF) is the share of blood your heart pumps out with each beat. It is normally about 55–70%. A low EF means the heart is pumping weakly.

What a 2D Echo can detect

The heart conditions this scan helps your doctor find.

  • Weak heart pumping

Heart failure or cardiomyopathy, seen as a low EF.

  • Valve disease

Valves that have narrowed or that leak.

  • Damage after a heart attack

Parts of the heart wall that no longer move well.

  • Congenital heart defects

Defects present from birth, such as a hole in the heart.

  • Fluid around the heart

Fluid collecting in the sac that surrounds the heart.

  • Blood clots

Clots that have formed inside the heart.

  • Pulmonary hypertension

High pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs.

  • Progress of treatment

How a known heart condition is responding over time.

A 2D echo supports your doctor's diagnosis; it does not replace a consultation. Please go through your report with your doctor.
