About this test

The HBsAg test by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) detects hepatitis B surface antigen in the blood. ELISA is more sensitive than rapid card tests and is widely used in blood banks and diagnostic labs.

A non-reactive result indicates no detectable hepatitis B infection. A reactive result suggests current hepatitis B infection, either acute or chronic. Persistence for over 6 months indicates chronic hepatitis B, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Reactive results should be confirmed and followed by HBV DNA and liver function tests.

It is also recommended during pregnancy, before surgery, dialysis, or blood donation, and for confirming a positive rapid test result.

How should I prepare for the HBSAG BY ELISA test?

No special preparation or fasting is required for an HBsAg test by ELISA. Inform your doctor if you received a hepatitis B vaccine in the past 2–3 weeks, as it can rarely cause a temporary positive result. Also mention any recent exposure, blood transfusion, or ongoing hepatitis B treatment.

Do I require fasting for the HBSAG BY ELISA test?

No, fasting is not required for an HBsAg test by ELISA. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, and the test can be done at any time of day. Inform your doctor about any recent hepatitis B vaccination or possible exposure, as these may affect interpretation of the results.
