Aquaporin-4 Antibodies (Nmo-IgG), CSF
₹7,800
The aquaporin-4 antibody (NMO-IgG) test detects autoantibodies against aquaporin-4, a water channel protein in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. It is done on a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample.
A normal result is negative.
A positive result confirms neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), which causes optic neuritis (vision loss), transverse myelitis (limb weakness, numbness), and intractable hiccups or vomiting.
The test helps distinguish NMOSD from multiple sclerosis (MS), which is crucial because treatments differ. Serum testing is more sensitive, so CSF results complement it.
An aquaporin-4 antibody (NMO-IgG) CSF test is advised by a neurologist if you have sudden vision loss or eye pain (optic neuritis), limb weakness, numbness, or bladder problems (transverse myelitis), or unexplained persistent hiccups or vomiting. It is also used when multiple sclerosis is suspected, to rule out NMOSD, especially when serum results are negative.
An aquaporin-4 antibody CSF test requires a lumbar puncture (spinal tap). Inform your doctor about blood thinners, bleeding disorders, allergies, or pregnancy, and about any steroids, immunotherapy, or plasma exchange, as these can lower antibody levels. Fasting is usually not required. Empty your bladder beforehand, and plan to rest afterward.
No, fasting is usually not required for an aquaporin-4 antibody (NMO-IgG) CSF test. You can eat and drink normally unless your doctor advises otherwise, for example if sedation is planned for the lumbar puncture. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners or bleeding disorders, and follow the hospital's specific instructions.
