About this test

The antiphospholipid antibody panel is a group of tests that detects autoantibodies linked to abnormal blood clotting. It typically includes anticardiolipin IgG/IgM, anti-beta-2 glycoprotein I IgG/IgM, and sometimes lupus anticoagulant, depending on the lab.

A normal result is negative for all antibodies.

Positive results suggest antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), which causes recurrent miscarriages, DVT, pulmonary embolism, and stroke at a young age, and is often associated with lupus (SLE).

Diagnosis requires persistent positivity on two tests at least 12 weeks apart. The panel helps guide anticoagulant therapy and pregnancy care.

Questions about this test

When should I get the ANTIPHOSPHOLIPID ANTIBODY PANEL test?

You should get an antiphospholipid antibody panel if you have recurrent miscarriages, unexplained blood clots (DVT or pulmonary embolism), or a stroke or heart attack at a young age. It is also recommended for people with lupus (SLE) or other autoimmune diseases, low platelets or a prolonged aPTT, and pregnancy complications like preeclampsia or stillbirth.

How should I prepare for the ANTIPHOSPHOLIPID ANTIBODY PANEL test?

No special preparation or fasting is required for an antiphospholipid antibody panel. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners like heparin, warfarin, or newer anticoagulants, as they can affect lupus anticoagulant results. Don't stop them without advice. Also mention recent infections, blood clots, or pregnancy. A repeat test after 12 weeks may be needed.

Do I require fasting for the ANTIPHOSPHOLIPID ANTIBODY PANEL test?

No, fasting is not required for an antiphospholipid antibody panel. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, recent infections, or pregnancy, as these may affect results, especially for lupus anticoagulant. Don't stop any prescribed medicine without your doctor's advice.
