VITAMIN K

The vitamin K test measures phylloquinone (vitamin K1), a fat-soluble vitamin essential for blood clotting and bone health.
Normal vitamin K levels are about 0.1–2.2 ng/mL, varying by lab.
Low vitamin K is seen in newborns, people with fat malabsorption or liver disease, and those on long-term antibiotics or warfarin. Vitamin K deficiency symptoms include easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy periods, and a prolonged PT/INR. In newborns, deficiency can cause serious bleeding.
High vitamin K is rare, but it can reduce the effect of blood thinners like warfarin.
You should get a vitamin K test if you have easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy periods, or a prolonged PT/INR. It is also recommended for people with fat malabsorption, liver disease, or long-term antibiotic use, those taking warfarin, and newborns at risk of bleeding.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is usually recommended before a vitamin K test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test. Inform your doctor about any vitamin K supplements, antibiotics, or blood thinners like warfarin, but don't stop any prescribed medicine without your doctor's advice.
