About this test

The vitamin D3 test measures 25-hydroxy cholecalciferol, the form of vitamin D made in the skin from sunlight and obtained from animal foods and D3 supplements. It is the main contributor to the body's vitamin D stores.

Normal vitamin D3 levels are about 30–100 ng/mL. Levels below 20 ng/mL indicate deficiency.

Low vitamin D3 is common with limited sun exposure, obesity, and malabsorption, and in elderly people. It causes bone pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, rickets, and osteoporosis. The test also helps monitor D3 supplementation and detect toxicity.
