About this test

The Vitamin D Gold test separately measures 25-OH vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol, from plants and supplements), 25-OH vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol, from sunlight and animal foods), and total vitamin D, usually by the highly accurate LC-MS/MS method.

Normal total vitamin D is 30–100 ng/mL. Levels of 20–29 ng/mL are insufficient, and levels below 20 ng/mL indicate deficiency.

The test helps identify the source of vitamin D, monitor D2 or D3 supplementation, and diagnose deficiency, which causes bone pain, weakness, and osteoporosis, as well as toxicity.

Questions about this test

When should I get the Vitamin D Gold (Covers Vitamin D2, Vitamin D3 & D Total) test?

You should get a Vitamin D Gold test if you have bone pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, or frequent infections, or if you are taking vitamin D2 or D3 supplements that need monitoring. It is especially useful when standard vitamin D results are unclear, and for people with osteoporosis, malabsorption, kidney or liver disease, or limited sun exposure.

How should I prepare for the Vitamin D Gold (Covers Vitamin D2, Vitamin D3 & D Total) test?

No special preparation is needed for a Vitamin D Gold test, and fasting is generally not required. Drink water normally and wear loose sleeves for easy sample collection. Inform your doctor about any vitamin D2, D3, calcium, or multivitamin supplements you take, including the dose and timing. Follow any specific instructions from your lab.

Do I require fasting for the Vitamin D Gold (Covers Vitamin D2, Vitamin D3 & D Total) test?

No, fasting is generally not required for a Vitamin D Gold test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. However, some labs may recommend a short fast, so follow their instructions. If other tests like blood sugar or a lipid profile are ordered alongside it, you may need to fast for 8–12 hours.
