About this test

The vitamin B1 test measures thiamine, a water-soluble vitamin essential for energy metabolism, nerve function, and heart health.

Normal vitamin B1 levels (whole blood thiamine) are about 70–180 nmol/L, varying by lab.

Low vitamin B1 is common in chronic alcoholism, malnutrition, bariatric surgery, prolonged vomiting, and long-term diuretic use. Thiamine deficiency symptoms include fatigue, irritability, numbness, and muscle weakness. Severe deficiency causes beriberi, with nerve damage or heart failure, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, with confusion, memory loss, and poor coordination.

High levels are rare, because excess thiamine is excreted in urine.
