Urine Sodium
₹320
The urine sodium test measures sodium in a spot urine sample, reflecting how the kidneys handle sodium. There is no fixed normal range, as results depend on diet and fluid status.
Low urine sodium (below 20 mEq/L) suggests dehydration, low blood volume, heart failure, cirrhosis, or prerenal kidney injury. High urine sodium (above 40 mEq/L) with low blood sodium suggests SIADH, diuretic use, adrenal insufficiency, salt-wasting kidney disease, or acute tubular necrosis.
It is interpreted with blood sodium and used to calculate FENa.
You should get a urine sodium test if your blood sodium is abnormal, or if you have signs of dehydration, reduced urine output, swelling, or acute kidney injury. It is also recommended for evaluating SIADH, adrenal disorders, heart failure, or cirrhosis, and for monitoring patients on diuretics or IV fluid therapy.
No fasting is required for a urine sodium test. Collect a clean, midstream urine sample in a sterile container. Follow your usual diet and fluid intake unless advised otherwise. Ideally, give the sample before diuretics or IV fluids, and inform your doctor about any medicines, as these can affect results.
