URINE MAGNESIUM
₹610
The urine magnesium test measures magnesium in a spot urine sample, showing how the kidneys handle magnesium. There is no fixed normal range, as results depend on diet and blood magnesium levels.
It is often used with blood magnesium and creatinine to calculate the fractional excretion of magnesium (FEMg). In low blood magnesium, an FEMg above 2% suggests kidney magnesium wasting, from diuretics, alcohol, certain drugs, or Gitelman syndrome. An FEMg below 2% suggests gut losses or poor intake.
The test helps guide magnesium replacement.
You should get a urine magnesium test if your blood magnesium is low and the cause is unclear, or if you have muscle cramps, twitching, weakness, or irregular heartbeat. It is also recommended for people taking diuretics, PPIs, or certain chemotherapy drugs, those with alcohol use or chronic diarrhea, and for evaluating kidney stones.
No fasting is required for a urine magnesium test. Collect a clean, midstream urine sample in a sterile container, usually at the same time as a blood magnesium test. Ideally, give the sample before starting magnesium supplements, and inform your doctor about diuretics, antacids, laxatives, or PPIs, as these can affect results.
No, fasting is not required for a urine magnesium test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. Collect a clean, midstream urine sample, preferably before starting magnesium supplements. Inform your doctor about any diuretics, antacids, or laxatives, as they can affect the results.
