Uric Acid
₹250
The uric acid test measures uric acid, a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines found in foods like red meat, organ meats, seafood, and alcohol.
Normal uric acid levels are about 3.4–7.0 mg/dL in men and 2.4–6.0 mg/dL in women, varying by lab.
High uric acid (hyperuricemia) can cause gout (painful joint swelling) and kidney stones. It is linked to kidney disease, obesity, diuretic use, alcohol, and cancer treatment, and to high blood pressure and heart disease.
Low uric acid may indicate liver disease or certain kidney disorders.
You should get a uric acid test if you have sudden joint pain, swelling, or redness, especially in the big toe, which may suggest gout, or recurrent kidney stones. It is also recommended for people with kidney disease, obesity, high blood pressure, or diabetes, those on chemotherapy, and for monitoring gout treatment.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is often recommended before a uric acid test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid alcohol and high-purine foods like red meat, organ meats, and seafood for 24 hours beforehand. Inform your doctor about medicines like diuretics, aspirin, allopurinol, or febuxostat, as they can affect results.
Fasting is often recommended for a uric acid test. You may be asked to fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. Also avoid alcohol and high-purine foods like red meat, organ meats, and seafood for 24 hours beforehand, as they can temporarily raise uric acid levels. Follow your lab's instructions.
