Troponin - T

The troponin T test measures cardiac troponin T, a protein released into the blood when heart muscle is damaged. It is the most specific marker for diagnosing a heart attack.
Normal troponin T levels are very low, typically below 14 ng/L with high-sensitivity assays, varying by lab.
Troponin rises within 3–6 hours of a heart attack, peaks at 12–24 hours, and may stay elevated for up to 2 weeks. High troponin T may also occur in myocarditis, heart failure, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, and kidney disease.
Serial testing helps confirm the diagnosis.
A troponin T test is done urgently if you have chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or dizziness, the warning signs of a heart attack. If you experience these symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately. It is also used to monitor heart damage.
No special preparation or fasting is required for a troponin T test. It is often done in an emergency, so never delay testing if you have chest pain. Inform your doctor about kidney disease, recent strenuous exercise, or biotin supplements, as these can affect results. Repeat tests may be done a few hours apart.
No, fasting is not required for a troponin T test. It can be done at any time, regardless of meals, and is often performed in an emergency. If you have chest pain or other heart attack symptoms, don't delay; seek medical care immediately. Repeat tests may be needed a few hours apart.
