Total Protein
₹250
The total protein test measures the two main blood proteins, albumin and globulin, which support immunity, fluid balance, tissue repair, and nutrient transport.
Normal total protein levels are about 6.0–8.3 g/dL, varying by lab.
High total protein may indicate dehydration, chronic infections or inflammation (such as hepatitis or HIV), or multiple myeloma. Low total protein suggests liver disease, kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome), malnutrition, malabsorption, or severe burns.
The test is interpreted with albumin, globulin, and the A/G ratio to identify the cause.
You should get a total protein test if you have unexplained weight loss, fatigue, swelling (edema), foamy urine, or symptoms of liver or kidney disease. It is also recommended for suspected malnutrition, malabsorption, chronic infections, or multiple myeloma, as part of a liver function test, and during routine health check-ups.
Fasting is usually not required for a total protein test alone. However, if it is done as part of a liver function test, fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. Stay normally hydrated, avoid strenuous exercise beforehand, and inform your doctor about medicines like steroids, hormones, or oral contraceptives.
Fasting is usually not required for a total protein test alone. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. However, if it is ordered as part of a liver function test or with other tests that need fasting, you should fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. Follow your lab's instructions.
