Total Bilirubin
₹250
The total bilirubin test measures bilirubin, a yellow pigment formed from the breakdown of red blood cells and processed by the liver.
Normal total bilirubin levels are about 0.2–1.2 mg/dL, varying by lab.
High bilirubin causes jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), usually visible above 2.5–3 mg/dL. Causes include hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver, gallstones, bile duct obstruction, hemolytic anemia, and Gilbert's syndrome. It is also common in newborns.
Measuring direct and indirect bilirubin helps identify whether the cause is liver-related, bile duct-related, or due to red cell breakdown.
You should get a total bilirubin test if you have yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, fatigue, or itching. It is also recommended for people with liver disease, gallstones, hemolytic anemia, or heavy alcohol use, for newborns with jaundice, and as part of a liver function test.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is usually recommended before a total bilirubin test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand. Inform your doctor about any medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies, as some can affect bilirubin levels. Follow your lab's specific instructions.
