The testosterone test measures total testosterone, the main male sex hormone, which is also present in small amounts in women. It regulates libido, muscle mass, bone strength, sperm production, and mood.
Normal levels are about 300–1000 ng/dL in men and 15–70 ng/dL in women, varying by age and lab.
Low testosterone in men causes low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, muscle loss, and infertility. High testosterone in women suggests PCOS or congenital adrenal hyperplasia, causing excess hair, acne, and irregular periods. Very high levels may indicate tumors or steroid use.
You should get a testosterone test if men have low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, reduced muscle mass, mood changes, or infertility. Women may need it for excess facial or body hair, acne, hair thinning, or irregular periods. It is also recommended for early or delayed puberty in boys, and for monitoring testosterone therapy.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is often recommended before a testosterone test, as eating can lower testosterone levels. Give your sample in the morning (around 7–10 AM), when levels peak. Women should ideally test on days 2–5 of the menstrual cycle. Inform your doctor about testosterone therapy, steroids, or hormonal medicines, and avoid testing during acute illness.
Fasting is often recommended for a testosterone test. You may be asked to fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water, as eating can temporarily lower testosterone. Give your sample in the morning (around 7–10 AM), when levels are highest. Follow your doctor's or lab's specific instructions.
