Sodium (Na+)

The sodium test measures sodium, a key electrolyte that controls fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle activity.
Normal blood sodium levels are 135–145 mEq/L.
Low sodium (hyponatremia) may result from vomiting, diarrhea, diuretics, heart failure, cirrhosis, kidney disease, SIADH, or excess water intake. It causes nausea, headache, confusion, and seizures.
High sodium (hypernatremia) usually results from dehydration, diabetes insipidus, or excess salt intake. It causes thirst, irritability, confusion, and seizures.
The test helps diagnose electrolyte imbalances.
You should get a sodium test if you have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, confusion, muscle weakness, excessive thirst, or seizures. It is also recommended for people with kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease, or high blood pressure, those taking diuretics, and during routine check-ups as part of an electrolyte panel.
No special preparation or fasting is required for a sodium test. Eat and drink normally, but avoid drinking excessive water or making major changes to salt intake just before the test. Inform your doctor about medicines like diuretics, steroids, antidepressants, or blood pressure drugs, as they can affect sodium levels.
No, fasting is not required for a sodium test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. However, avoid drinking excessive water just before the test. If other tests that need fasting are ordered alongside it, such as blood sugar or a lipid profile, follow those instructions.
