SGPT
₹250
The SGPT test, also called ALT (alanine aminotransferase), measures an enzyme found mainly in the liver. It is the most specific enzyme marker of liver cell damage.
Normal SGPT levels are about 7–40 U/L, varying by lab.
High SGPT indicates liver injury, seen in viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, cirrhosis, and drug-induced liver damage. Very high levels (often above 1000 U/L) suggest acute viral or toxic hepatitis.
In fatty liver, SGPT is usually higher than SGOT. SGPT is interpreted with SGOT.
You should get an SGPT test if you have jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, dark urine, fatigue, or loss of appetite. It is also recommended for people with fatty liver, hepatitis, obesity, diabetes, or regular alcohol use, those taking medicines that affect the liver, and as part of a liver function test during routine check-ups.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is usually recommended before an SGPT test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours and strenuous exercise beforehand, as both can affect SGPT levels. Inform your doctor about any medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies you take.
