SGOT
₹250
The SGOT test, also called AST (aspartate aminotransferase), measures an enzyme found mainly in the liver, heart, muscles, and red blood cells. It rises when these tissues are damaged.
Normal SGOT levels are about 5–40 U/L, varying by lab.
High SGOT may indicate hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis, alcohol-related liver disease, or drug-induced liver injury. It can also rise after a heart attack, muscle injury, or hemolysis.
An AST/ALT ratio above 2:1 suggests alcoholic liver disease. SGOT is interpreted with SGPT.
You should get an SGOT test if you have jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, dark urine, fatigue, or loss of appetite. It is also recommended for people with regular alcohol use, fatty liver, hepatitis, obesity, or diabetes, those taking medicines that affect the liver, and as part of a liver function test during routine check-ups.
Avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours and strenuous exercise beforehand, as both can raise SGOT levels. Inform your doctor about any medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies you take.
Yes, fasting is usually recommended for an SGOT test. You should fast for 8–12 hours before giving your sample, though drinking water is allowed. Also avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours and strenuous exercise beforehand, as they can raise SGOT levels and affect results.
Checkups that cover SGOT along with other tests.
