Prolactin (Tripooled Sample)
₹650
The tri-pooled prolactin test measures prolactin from three blood samples taken 20–30 minutes apart, which are mixed (pooled) before testing. This reduces the effect of natural hormone fluctuations and needle-related stress, which can falsely raise prolactin.
Normal prolactin levels are about 5–25 ng/mL in women and 4–15 ng/mL in men, varying by lab.
The test gives a more reliable result, helping confirm true hyperprolactinemia caused by prolactinoma, hypothyroidism, or medicines, and avoids unnecessary treatment or MRI scans.
You should get a tri-pooled prolactin test if a single prolactin test showed mildly high levels, to rule out a false result due to stress or hormone fluctuations. It is also recommended for irregular periods, infertility, milky nipple discharge, low libido, or erectile dysfunction, and before starting treatment for suspected hyperprolactinemia.
Fasting is usually not required for a tri-pooled prolactin test, but avoid a heavy meal beforehand. Plan to spend about 1 hour at the lab, as three samples are taken 20–30 minutes apart. Rest calmly between samples. Avoid stress, exercise, sexual activity, and nipple stimulation for 24 hours, and inform your doctor about your medicines.
Fasting is usually not required for a tri-pooled prolactin test, though you should avoid a heavy or high-protein meal beforehand. More importantly, plan for about 1 hour at the lab, as three samples are taken 20–30 minutes apart, and avoid stress, exercise, and sexual activity for 24 hours beforehand.
