Prolactin

The prolactin test measures prolactin, a hormone made by the pituitary gland that stimulates breast milk production.
Normal prolactin levels are about 5–25 ng/mL in women and 4–15 ng/mL in men, varying by lab.
High prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) may result from a prolactinoma (pituitary tumor), pregnancy, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, stress, or medicines like antipsychotics. It causes irregular periods, infertility, and breast milk discharge in women, and low libido, erectile dysfunction, and breast enlargement in men.
Low prolactin may indicate pituitary insufficiency.
You should get a prolactin test if you have irregular or absent periods, infertility, or milky nipple discharge without breastfeeding. Men may need it for low libido, erectile dysfunction, or breast enlargement. It is also recommended for unexplained headaches or vision problems, suspected pituitary tumors, and for monitoring prolactinoma treatment.
Fasting is usually not required for a prolactin test, but avoid a heavy meal beforehand. Give your sample 3–4 hours after waking, and rest for 15–30 minutes before collection. Avoid stress, strenuous exercise, sexual activity, and nipple stimulation for 24 hours. Inform your doctor about medicines like antipsychotics, antidepressants, or metoclopramide.
Fasting is usually not required for a prolactin test, though you should avoid a heavy or high-protein meal beforehand. More importantly, give your sample 3–4 hours after waking, rest for 15–30 minutes before collection, and avoid stress, exercise, and sexual activity for 24 hours, as these can raise prolactin.
