About this test

The NGS familial HLH test uses next-generation sequencing to detect mutations in genes linked to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), such as PRF1, UNC13D, STX11, STXBP2, RAB27A, LYST, SH2D1A, and XIAP.

A normal result shows no disease-causing variants.

A positive result confirms familial (primary) HLH, a life-threatening immune disorder, and distinguishes it from secondary HLH triggered by infection or cancer.

It guides the need for bone marrow (stem cell) transplant, the only cure, and helps with donor selection, genetic counseling, and carrier and prenatal testing.

Questions about this test

When should I get the NGS Familial HLH(Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis) test?

An NGS familial HLH test is advised by a doctor when HLH is diagnosed or suspected, especially in infants and young children, or with persistent fever, enlarged liver or spleen, low blood counts, and very high ferritin. It is also recommended for recurrent HLH, a family history of HLH, and screening potential sibling stem cell donors.

How should I prepare for the NGS Familial HLH(Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis) test?

No special preparation or fasting is required for an NGS familial HLH test, as it analyzes DNA from a blood sample. Inform your doctor about any recent blood transfusion or stem cell transplant, as these can affect results. Share your family history, and consider genetic counseling before and after testing.

Do I require fasting for the NGS Familial HLH(Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis) test?

No, fasting is not required for an NGS familial HLH test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, because the test analyzes your DNA, which is not affected by food or the time of day. Inform your doctor about any recent blood transfusion or stem cell transplant.
