The magnesium test measures magnesium, a mineral essential for muscle and nerve function, heart rhythm, bone health, and energy production.
Normal magnesium levels are about 1.7–2.4 mg/dL, varying by lab.
Low magnesium (hypomagnesemia) may result from poor diet, alcoholism, diarrhea, diuretics, PPIs, or uncontrolled diabetes. It causes muscle cramps, tremors, weakness, irregular heartbeat, and seizures, often with low potassium and calcium.
High magnesium usually occurs with kidney failure or excess supplements, antacids, or laxatives, causing weakness, low blood pressure, and slow heartbeat.
You should get a magnesium test if you have muscle cramps, twitching, tremors, weakness, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, or seizures. It is also recommended for people with kidney disease, diabetes, alcoholism, chronic diarrhea, or low potassium or calcium, those taking diuretics or PPIs long-term, and pregnant women receiving magnesium therapy.
Fasting is usually not required for a magnesium test, though some labs may recommend it. Inform your doctor about any magnesium supplements, antacids, laxatives, diuretics, or PPIs, as these can affect results, and you may be asked to pause supplements for 24 hours. Follow your lab's specific instructions.
Fasting is usually not required for a magnesium test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, though some labs may recommend fasting, so follow their instructions. Inform your doctor about any magnesium supplements, antacids, or laxatives, as you may need to pause them before the test.
