LIPASE
₹700
The lipase test measures lipase, a fat-digesting enzyme made mainly by the pancreas. It is the most specific blood test for diagnosing pancreatitis.
Normal lipase levels are typically about 10–160 U/L, varying widely by lab method.
Lipase above 3 times the normal limit strongly suggests acute pancreatitis. Lipase rises within hours and stays elevated longer than amylase, for up to 1–2 weeks. High levels may also occur with gallstones, pancreatic cancer, kidney failure, bowel obstruction, or perforated ulcer. Low lipase may indicate chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis.
You should get a lipase test if you have severe upper abdominal pain spreading to the back, nausea, vomiting, fever, or abdominal tenderness, which may suggest pancreatitis. It is also recommended for people with gallstones or heavy alcohol use, and for monitoring pancreatic disease, cystic fibrosis, or recovery after pancreatitis treatment.
Fasting is usually not required for a lipase test, though some labs recommend fasting for 8–12 hours. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. Inform your doctor about medicines like opioid painkillers, diuretics, steroids, or oral contraceptives, as they can affect lipase levels. If you have severe abdominal pain, don't delay testing.
Fasting is usually not required for a lipase test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, though some labs may recommend an 8–12 hour fast, so follow their instructions. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. If you have severe abdominal pain, get tested promptly without waiting to fast.
