About this test

The serum iron test measures the amount of iron circulating in the blood. Iron is essential for hemoglobin production and oxygen transport.

Normal serum iron levels are about 60–170 µg/dL, varying by age, sex, and lab.

Low iron levels indicate iron deficiency anemia, often due to blood loss, heavy periods, poor diet, pregnancy, or malabsorption. Symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, hair loss, and breathlessness.

High iron levels suggest hemochromatosis, frequent blood transfusions, liver disease, or iron poisoning, which can damage the liver and heart.

Questions about this test

When should I get the Iron test?

You should get a serum iron test if you have fatigue, weakness, pale skin, hair loss, brittle nails, or shortness of breath, or if a CBC shows anemia. It is also recommended for pregnant women, people with heavy periods or chronic blood loss, those on iron supplements, and people with suspected iron overload.

How should I prepare for the Iron test?

Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended before a serum iron test, and you may drink water during this time. Give your sample in the morning, when iron levels are highest. Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours before the test, and inform your doctor about any medicines, recent transfusions, or pregnancy.

Do I require fasting for the Iron test?

Yes, fasting is required for a serum iron test. You should fast for 8–12 hours and preferably give your sample in the morning, though drinking water is allowed. Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours beforehand, as recent intake can falsely raise your iron levels.
