Ionised Calcium
₹1,150
The ionized calcium test measures the free, biologically active calcium in the blood, which makes up about 50% of total calcium. It controls muscle, nerve, and heart function.
Normal ionized calcium levels are about 4.6–5.3 mg/dL (1.15–1.33 mmol/L), varying by lab.
Unlike total calcium, it is not affected by albumin levels, making it more accurate in critical illness, low albumin, kidney disease, major surgery, and blood transfusions.
High levels suggest hyperparathyroidism or cancer. Low levels may cause muscle spasms, tingling, seizures, and irregular heartbeat.
You should get an ionized calcium test if your total calcium is abnormal but your albumin is low, or if you have muscle spasms, tingling, or irregular heartbeat. It is also recommended during critical illness, major surgery, or multiple blood transfusions, and for people with kidney disease or parathyroid disorders.
Fasting for 6–8 hours is often recommended before an ionized calcium test, and you may drink water during this time. Stay relaxed and avoid clenching your fist during sample collection, as it can affect results. Avoid calcium supplements and antacids beforehand, and inform your doctor about any medicines you take.
