About this test

The HBsAg qualitative test detects the presence or absence of hepatitis B surface antigen in the blood. Results are reported as reactive (positive) or non-reactive (negative), rather than as a numerical level.

A non-reactive result means no hepatitis B infection is detected. A reactive result indicates current hepatitis B infection, either acute or chronic. Persistence beyond 6 months confirms chronic hepatitis B.

It is the main screening test for hepatitis B in pregnancy, blood donation, and pre-surgery checks. Reactive results need HBV DNA and liver function tests.

Questions about this test

When should I get the Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HbsAg) Qualitative test?

You should get an HBsAg qualitative test if you have jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or nausea, or possible exposure through unprotected sex, shared needles, tattoos, or blood transfusion. It is also recommended during pregnancy, before surgery, dialysis, or blood donation, and for healthcare workers and family members of infected people.

How should I prepare for the Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HbsAg) Qualitative test?

No special preparation or fasting is required for an HBsAg qualitative test. Inform your doctor if you received a hepatitis B vaccine in the past 2–3 weeks, as it can rarely cause a temporary positive result. Also mention any recent exposure, blood transfusion, or ongoing hepatitis B treatment.

Do I require fasting for the Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HbsAg) Qualitative test?

No, fasting is not required for an HBsAg qualitative test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, and the test can be done at any time of day. Inform your doctor about any recent hepatitis B vaccination or possible exposure, as these may affect interpretation of the results.
