HDL-Cholesterol

The HDL cholesterol test measures high-density lipoprotein, known as "good cholesterol," which removes excess cholesterol from the blood and protects the heart.
Normal HDL levels are above 40 mg/dL in men and above 50 mg/dL in women. Levels of 60 mg/dL or higher are considered protective.
Low HDL increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis. It is often linked to smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
Regular exercise, quitting smoking, weight loss, and healthy fats can help raise HDL levels.
You should get an HDL cholesterol test as part of a routine health check-up or lipid profile, usually every 4–6 years for healthy adults, and more often if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking habits, metabolic syndrome, or a family history of heart disease. It also helps monitor lifestyle changes and cholesterol treatment.
Fasting is not strictly required for an HDL cholesterol test, as meals have little effect on HDL levels. However, if it is done as part of a lipid profile, fast for 10–12 hours, drinking only water. Avoid alcohol and heavy exercise for 24 hours beforehand, and inform your doctor about any cholesterol-lowering medicines.
Fasting is usually not required for an HDL cholesterol test alone, because food has little effect on HDL levels. However, if your doctor has ordered a full lipid profile that includes triglycerides and LDL, you should fast for 10–12 hours, drinking only water. Follow your doctor's or lab's instructions.
