About this test

The HBsAg test detects hepatitis B surface antigen, the earliest marker of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The CMIA (chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay) method is highly sensitive and accurate.

A non-reactive result means no HBsAg is detected.

A reactive result indicates current hepatitis B infection. If it persists for more than 6 months, it suggests chronic hepatitis B, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The test is used for screening in pregnancy, before surgery, and for blood donors. Reactive results need confirmatory testing, HBV DNA, and liver tests.

When should I get the HBSAG by CMIA test?

You should get an HBsAg test by CMIA if you have jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or nausea, or have had possible exposure through unprotected sex, shared needles, or blood transfusion. It is also recommended during pregnancy, before surgery or dialysis, for healthcare workers, and for family members of infected people.

How should I prepare for the HBSAG by CMIA test?

No special preparation or fasting is required for an HBsAg test by CMIA. Inform your doctor if you received a hepatitis B vaccine in the past 2–3 weeks, as it can rarely cause a temporary positive result. Also mention any recent exposure, blood transfusion, or ongoing treatment for hepatitis B.

Do I require fasting for the HBSAG by CMIA test?

No, fasting is not required for an HBsAg test by CMIA. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, and the test can be done at any time of day. Inform your doctor about any recent hepatitis B vaccination or possible exposure, as these may affect interpretation.
