GGT
₹550
The GGT test measures gamma-glutamyl transferase, an enzyme found mainly in the liver and bile ducts. It is a sensitive marker of liver and bile duct disease.
Normal GGT levels are about 8–61 U/L, slightly higher in men and varying by lab.
High GGT may indicate alcohol-related liver damage, bile duct obstruction, gallstones, fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. It can also rise with medicines like phenytoin.
High ALP with high GGT confirms a liver source, while high ALP with normal GGT suggests bone disease.
You should get a GGT test if you have jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, dark urine, pale stools, or itching, or if your alkaline phosphatase is high. It is also recommended for people with regular alcohol use, fatty liver, gallstones, or hepatitis, those taking liver-affecting medicines, and for monitoring alcohol abstinence.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is usually recommended before a GGT test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours, as even small amounts can raise GGT levels. Inform your doctor about medicines like phenytoin, phenobarbital, or other drugs and supplements you take, as they can affect results.
