FSH

The FSH test measures follicle-stimulating hormone, produced by the pituitary gland. It controls egg development in women and sperm production in men.
Normal FSH levels vary by sex, age, and menstrual cycle phase.
High FSH indicates menopause, low ovarian reserve, premature ovarian failure, Turner syndrome, or testicular failure. A day-3 FSH above 10 mIU/mL suggests reduced fertility potential. Low FSH may indicate pituitary or hypothalamic disorders, stress, low body weight, or high prolactin.
The test helps evaluate infertility, irregular periods, menopause, and puberty disorders.
You should get an FSH test if you have irregular or absent periods, difficulty conceiving, or symptoms of menopause like hot flashes and night sweats. Men may need it for low sperm count or low testosterone. It is also recommended for assessing ovarian reserve before fertility treatment, and for early or delayed puberty.
No fasting is required for an FSH test. Women should usually test on days 2–5 of the menstrual cycle (often day 3) for accurate fertility assessment. Inform your doctor about oral contraceptives, hormone therapy, or fertility medicines, as these can affect results. Stop biotin supplements 48–72 hours beforehand.
No, fasting is not required for an FSH test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. However, timing matters for women: the test is usually done on days 2–5 of the menstrual cycle, often day 3, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Stop biotin supplements 48–72 hours beforehand.
