Fluid Lipase
₹710
The fluid lipase test measures lipase, a fat-digesting enzyme produced by the pancreas, in body fluids such as ascitic, pleural, or surgical drain fluid. It is compared with serum lipase.
Because lipase is more pancreas-specific than amylase, high fluid lipase strongly suggests a pancreatic source, such as pancreatic ascites, acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic duct disruption, or a pseudocyst. Raised pleural fluid lipase indicates a pancreatic pleural effusion.
After pancreatic surgery, high drain fluid lipase suggests a pancreatic leak (fistula).
A fluid lipase test is advised by a doctor when there is unexplained ascites or pleural effusion, especially in people with pancreatitis, a pancreatic pseudocyst, or heavy alcohol use. It is also used after pancreatic or abdominal surgery to check drain fluid for a pancreatic leak, and is often done alongside fluid amylase.
A fluid lipase test uses a fluid sample collected by a doctor through paracentesis or thoracentesis, or directly from a surgical drain. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, allergies, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. Fasting is usually not required. A blood sample for serum lipase is often taken at the same time for comparison.
No, fasting is usually not required for a fluid lipase test. You can eat and drink normally unless your doctor advises otherwise, for example if sedation is planned for the fluid collection procedure. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners or bleeding disorders, and follow the hospital's specific instructions.
