Fluid LDH
₹500
The fluid LDH test measures lactate dehydrogenase in body fluids such as pleural, peritoneal (ascitic), synovial, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It is interpreted alongside serum LDH.
According to Light's criteria, a fluid-to-serum LDH ratio above 0.6, or fluid LDH above two-thirds of the upper normal serum limit, indicates an exudate, caused by infection, tuberculosis, malignancy, or empyema. Lower values suggest a transudate, as in heart failure or cirrhosis.
High CSF LDH may indicate bacterial meningitis or CNS tumors.
A fluid LDH test is advised by a doctor when there is an abnormal fluid buildup, such as pleural effusion, ascites, joint effusion, or suspected meningitis. It helps determine whether the fluid is a transudate or exudate and evaluate causes like infection, tuberculosis, malignancy, or empyema. It is usually done alongside serum LDH.
A fluid LDH test requires a fluid sample collected by a doctor through a procedure such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, joint aspiration, or lumbar puncture. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, allergies, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. Fasting is usually not required. A blood sample for serum LDH is often taken at the same time.
No, fasting is usually not required for a fluid LDH test. You can eat and drink normally unless your doctor advises otherwise, for example if sedation is planned for the fluid collection procedure. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners or bleeding disorders, and follow the hospital's specific instructions.
