Fluid CEA
₹1,070
The fluid CEA test measures carcinoembryonic antigen in body fluids such as pleural, ascitic, or pancreatic cyst fluid.
In pleural or ascitic fluid, high CEA suggests a malignant effusion, usually from adenocarcinomas of the lung, stomach, colon, or breast. It is especially helpful when cytology is negative.
In pancreatic cyst fluid, CEA above about 192 ng/mL suggests a mucinous cyst (such as IPMN or mucinous cystic neoplasm), which can become cancerous, rather than a benign pseudocyst or serous cyst.
The test guides further evaluation and treatment.
A fluid CEA test is advised by a doctor when there is an unexplained pleural effusion or ascites and cancer is suspected, especially when cytology results are negative or unclear. It is also used to evaluate pancreatic cysts, usually through endoscopic ultrasound, to determine whether they are mucinous and potentially cancerous.
A fluid CEA test uses a sample collected by a doctor through thoracentesis, paracentesis, or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for pancreatic cysts. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, allergies, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. Fasting is usually not required, except for EUS, which needs 6–8 hours of fasting because sedation is used.
Fasting is usually not required for a fluid CEA test when the sample is collected from pleural or abdominal fluid. However, if the sample is taken from a pancreatic cyst through endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), you will need to fast for 6–8 hours because sedation is used. Follow your doctor's instructions.
