Fluid Amylase
₹600
The fluid amylase test measures amylase in body fluids such as ascitic, pleural, or surgical drain fluid, and is compared with serum amylase.
High ascitic fluid amylase, often above 1000 U/L, suggests pancreatic ascites, pancreatitis, a pancreatic duct leak, or bowel perforation. Raised pleural fluid amylase indicates pancreatitis-related effusion, a pancreatic pseudocyst, esophageal rupture, or certain cancers.
After pancreatic surgery, drain fluid amylase above 3 times the serum level indicates a pancreatic fistula.
The test helps identify the cause of fluid buildup.
A fluid amylase test is advised by a doctor when there is unexplained ascites or pleural effusion, especially in people with pancreatitis, a pancreatic pseudocyst, or heavy alcohol use. It is also used after pancreatic or abdominal surgery to check drain fluid for a pancreatic leak, and when esophageal rupture is suspected.
A fluid amylase test uses a fluid sample collected by a doctor through paracentesis or thoracentesis, or directly from a surgical drain. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, allergies, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. Fasting is usually not required. A blood sample for serum amylase is often taken at the same time for comparison.
No, fasting is usually not required for a fluid amylase test. You can eat and drink normally unless your doctor advises otherwise, for example if sedation is planned for the fluid collection procedure. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners or bleeding disorders, and follow the hospital's specific instructions.
