Direct Bilirubin
₹250
The direct bilirubin test measures conjugated bilirubin, the form processed by the liver and excreted into bile.
Normal direct bilirubin levels are about 0–0.3 mg/dL, varying by lab.
High direct bilirubin indicates liver disease or blocked bile flow, seen in hepatitis, cirrhosis, gallstones, bile duct obstruction, pancreatic tumors, and drug-induced liver injury. Rare inherited causes include Dubin-Johnson and Rotor syndromes. In newborns, it may signal biliary atresia, which needs urgent care.
Symptoms include jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, and itching.
You should get a direct bilirubin test if you have jaundice, dark urine, pale or clay-colored stools, itching, or pain in the upper right abdomen. It is also recommended when total bilirubin is high, for suspected gallstones, hepatitis, or bile duct obstruction, and for newborns with prolonged jaundice beyond 2 weeks.
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand, and avoid strenuous exercise. Inform your doctor about any medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies, as some can affect bilirubin levels. Follow your lab's instructions.
Yes, fasting is usually recommended for a direct bilirubin test. You should fast for 8–12 hours before giving your sample, though drinking water is allowed. Also avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand, as it can affect liver function and bilirubin results. Follow your lab's specific instructions.
