The serum creatinine test measures creatinine, a waste product of muscle metabolism that is filtered by the kidneys. It is a key marker of kidney function.
Normal creatinine levels are about 0.7–1.3 mg/dL in men and 0.6–1.1 mg/dL in women, varying by lab.
High creatinine indicates reduced kidney function, seen in acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, dehydration, urinary obstruction, or muscle breakdown. Low creatinine may occur with low muscle mass, malnutrition, or pregnancy.
Creatinine is used to calculate eGFR, which helps stage kidney disease.
You should get a creatinine test if you have swelling in the feet or face, reduced or foamy urine, fatigue, nausea, or high blood pressure. It is also recommended for people with diabetes, hypertension, kidney stones, or a family history of kidney disease, during routine check-ups, and when taking medicines that affect the kidneys.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is often recommended before a creatinine test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid cooked meat or high-protein meals, creatine supplements, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours beforehand, as these can raise creatinine levels. Stay hydrated, and inform your doctor about any medicines you take.
Fasting is often recommended for a creatinine test. You may be asked to fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. More importantly, avoid cooked meat, high-protein meals, and creatine supplements for 24 hours beforehand, as they can temporarily raise creatinine levels. Follow your doctor's or lab's specific instructions.
