Cholesterol Total, Body Fluid
₹300
The body fluid total cholesterol test measures cholesterol in fluids such as pleural fluid and peritoneal (ascitic) fluid.
In pleural fluid, cholesterol above 45–60 mg/dL, or a fluid-to-serum ratio above 0.3, suggests an exudate, caused by infection, tuberculosis, or malignancy. Very high levels (above 200 mg/dL) indicate a pseudochylothorax, seen in chronic TB or rheumatoid effusions.
In ascitic fluid, high cholesterol (above about 45 mg/dL) may suggest malignant ascites.
The test complements protein and LDH analysis in evaluating fluid buildup.
A body fluid total cholesterol test is advised by a doctor when there is an abnormal fluid buildup, such as pleural effusion or ascites. It helps determine whether the fluid is a transudate or exudate, identify a pseudochylothorax, and evaluate causes like tuberculosis, malignancy, or infection. It is usually done alongside fluid protein and LDH tests.
A body fluid total cholesterol test requires a fluid sample collected by a doctor through a procedure such as thoracentesis (pleural fluid) or paracentesis (ascitic fluid). Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, allergies, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. Fasting is usually not required. A blood sample for serum cholesterol may be taken at the same time.
No, fasting is usually not required for a body fluid total cholesterol test. You can eat and drink normally unless your doctor advises otherwise, for example if sedation is planned for the fluid collection procedure. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners or bleeding disorders, and follow the hospital's specific instructions.
