The calcium test measures calcium in the blood, which is essential for bone strength, muscle contraction, nerve function, heart rhythm, and blood clotting.
Normal calcium levels are about 8.5–10.5 mg/dL, varying by lab. Results are often corrected for albumin.
High calcium (hypercalcemia) may indicate hyperparathyroidism, cancer, vitamin D excess, or sarcoidosis, causing thirst, constipation, kidney stones, bone pain, and confusion.
Low calcium (hypocalcemia) may result from vitamin D deficiency, hypoparathyroidism, kidney disease, or low magnesium, causing tingling, muscle cramps, spasms, and seizures.
You should get a calcium test if you have bone pain, muscle cramps or spasms, tingling in the fingers or lips, fatigue, excessive thirst, constipation, or kidney stones. It is also recommended for people with kidney disease, parathyroid or thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, cancer, or vitamin D deficiency, and during routine check-ups.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is often recommended before a calcium test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid calcium or vitamin D supplements and antacids on the morning of the test unless advised otherwise. Inform your doctor about medicines like diuretics, lithium, or hormone therapy, as they can affect calcium levels.
Fasting is often recommended for a calcium test. You may be asked to fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. Also avoid calcium or vitamin D supplements and antacids before the test unless your doctor advises otherwise, as they can temporarily raise calcium levels. Follow your lab's specific instructions.
