CA 125

The CA-125 test measures cancer antigen 125, a protein used mainly as a tumor marker for ovarian cancer.
Normal CA-125 levels are below 35 U/mL.
High CA-125 may indicate ovarian cancer, as well as endometrial, fallopian tube, or peritoneal cancer. It can also rise in non-cancerous conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, menstruation, pregnancy, and liver disease.
CA-125 is not used for routine screening. It helps evaluate pelvic masses, especially after menopause, monitor treatment response, and detect cancer recurrence.
You should get a CA-125 test if you have an ovarian mass or cyst, especially after menopause, or persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, early fullness, or changes in bowel or bladder habits. It is also recommended for monitoring ovarian cancer treatment and recurrence, and for women with a strong family history or BRCA mutations.
No special preparation or fasting is required for a CA-125 test. If you menstruate, avoid testing during your period, as it can raise CA-125 levels. Inform your doctor about pregnancy, endometriosis, recent surgery, or pelvic infections. Stop biotin supplements 48–72 hours beforehand, and use the same lab for follow-up tests.
No, fasting is not required for a CA-125 test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. However, avoid testing during your menstrual period, as it can temporarily raise CA-125 levels. Stop biotin supplements 48–72 hours beforehand, and follow your lab's instructions.
