Bun/Creatinine Ratio
₹500
The BUN/creatinine ratio compares blood urea nitrogen (BUN) with creatinine levels to help identify the cause of abnormal kidney function.
Normal ratio is about 10:1 to 20:1.
A high ratio (above 20:1) suggests dehydration, heart failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, a high-protein diet, steroid use, or urinary tract obstruction. A low ratio (below 10:1) may indicate liver disease, malnutrition, a low-protein diet, intrinsic kidney damage, or muscle breakdown.
The ratio helps distinguish prerenal, renal, and postrenal causes of kidney problems.
You should get a BUN/creatinine ratio test if your BUN or creatinine levels are abnormal, or if you have reduced urine output, swelling, fatigue, nausea, confusion, or signs of dehydration. It is also recommended for people with kidney disease, heart failure, GI bleeding, diabetes, or high blood pressure, and for monitoring kidney function.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is usually recommended before a BUN/creatinine ratio test, and you may drink water during this time. Avoid a heavy meat or high-protein meal, alcohol, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours beforehand, as these can affect results. Stay well hydrated, and inform your doctor about medicines like diuretics, steroids, or painkillers.
