BM Iron Stain
₹600
The bone marrow (BM) iron stain, also called Perls' Prussian blue stain, assesses iron stores in a bone marrow sample. It is considered the gold standard for evaluating body iron.
Absent marrow iron confirms iron deficiency anemia. Increased iron stores are seen in anemia of chronic disease, thalassemia, hemochromatosis, and after repeated blood transfusions. The presence of ring sideroblasts helps diagnose sideroblastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).
It is useful when blood iron tests are inconclusive or when a bone marrow disorder is suspected.
A bone marrow iron stain is usually advised by a doctor, often a hematologist, during a bone marrow examination. It is recommended when anemia remains unexplained or blood iron tests are inconclusive, and when sideroblastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), iron overload, or other bone marrow disorders are suspected.
A bone marrow iron stain is done on a bone marrow aspiration or biopsy sample. Inform your doctor about any blood thinners, allergies, bleeding disorders, or pregnancy. You may be asked to fast for a few hours if sedation is planned. Wear comfortable clothes, and arrange for someone to accompany you home.
Fasting is usually not required for a bone marrow iron stain test done under local anesthesia. However, if sedation is planned for the bone marrow procedure, you may need to fast for 4–6 hours beforehand. Always follow your doctor's or hospital's specific instructions before the procedure.
