About this test

The Apo B/Apo A1 ratio compares apolipoprotein B (found in "bad" LDL and VLDL particles) with apolipoprotein A1 (the main protein in "good" HDL). It reflects the balance between harmful and protective cholesterol.

Desirable ratio levels are below 0.9 in men and below 0.8 in women.

A higher ratio indicates more atherogenic particles and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis. It is considered a stronger predictor of cardiovascular risk than standard cholesterol ratios.

The test helps assess heart risk and monitor lipid-lowering treatment.

Questions about this test

When should I get the APO B/APO A1(Ratio) test?

You should get an Apo B/Apo A1 ratio test if you have a family history of early heart disease, low HDL or high triglycerides, or risk factors like diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, smoking, or high blood pressure. It is especially useful when routine cholesterol results seem normal but heart risk is high, and for monitoring lipid-lowering treatment.

How should I prepare for the APO B/APO A1(Ratio) test?

Fasting for 10–12 hours is usually recommended before an Apo B/Apo A1 ratio test, especially if it is done with a lipid profile. You may drink water during this time. Avoid alcohol and fatty foods for 24 hours beforehand, and inform your doctor about any cholesterol-lowering medicines, hormone therapy, or oral contraceptives.

Do I require fasting for the APO B/APO A1(Ratio) test?

Yes, fasting is usually recommended for an Apo B/Apo A1 ratio test. You should fast for 10–12 hours before giving your sample, though drinking water is allowed. This is especially important if the test is done with a lipid profile. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, and follow your lab's specific instructions.
