AMYLASE
₹600
The amylase test measures amylase, a digestive enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands that helps break down carbohydrates.
Normal amylase levels are about 30–110 U/L, varying by lab.
Amylase above 3 times the normal limit strongly suggests acute pancreatitis. Raised levels may also occur with gallstones, pancreatic cancer, bowel obstruction, perforated ulcer, mumps, kidney failure, or ectopic pregnancy. Low amylase may indicate chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis.
Amylase is often interpreted with lipase, which is more specific to the pancreas.
You should get an amylase test if you have severe upper abdominal pain spreading to the back, nausea, vomiting, fever, or abdominal tenderness, which may suggest pancreatitis. It is also recommended for people with gallstones, heavy alcohol use, or swollen salivary glands, and for monitoring known pancreatic disease and treatment.
Fasting is usually not required for an amylase test, though some labs recommend fasting for a few hours. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. Inform your doctor about medicines like opioid painkillers, steroids, diuretics, or oral contraceptives, as they can raise amylase. If you have severe abdominal pain, don't delay testing.
Fasting is usually not required for an amylase test. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample, though some labs may recommend a short fast, so follow their instructions. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. If you have severe abdominal pain, get tested promptly without waiting to fast.
