Alkaline Phosphatase
₹250
The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test measures an enzyme found mainly in the liver, bile ducts, and bones.
Normal ALP levels in adults are about 44–147 IU/L. Levels are naturally higher in children, teenagers, and pregnant women.
High ALP may indicate bile duct obstruction, gallstones, hepatitis, or liver cancer. Bone-related causes include Paget's disease, healing fractures, rickets, osteomalacia, bone metastases, and hyperparathyroidism. GGT helps confirm whether the source is the liver.
Low ALP may suggest malnutrition, zinc deficiency, or hypophosphatasia.
You should get an alkaline phosphatase test if you have jaundice, abdominal pain, dark urine, pale stools, or itching, which suggest liver or bile duct problems, or bone pain, fractures, or bone deformities. It is also recommended as part of a liver function test, for monitoring liver or bone disease, and during cancer evaluation.
A recent fatty meal can falsely raise ALP levels. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand, and inform your doctor about any medicines, pregnancy, or recent fractures, as these can affect results.
Yes, fasting is usually recommended for an alkaline phosphatase test. You should fast for 8–12 hours before giving your sample, though drinking water is allowed. Eating, especially a fatty meal, can temporarily raise ALP levels and affect results. Follow your doctor's or lab's specific instructions.
