The albumin test measures albumin, the main protein made by the liver. It maintains fluid balance and transports hormones, vitamins, and medicines.
Normal albumin levels are about 3.5–5.0 g/dL, varying by lab.
Low albumin (hypoalbuminemia) may indicate liver disease, kidney disease (nephrotic syndrome), malnutrition, malabsorption, severe infections, or burns. It can cause swelling in the legs, abdominal fluid (ascites), and fatigue.
High albumin usually indicates dehydration.
Albumin also reflects nutritional status and helps predict outcomes in illness.
You should get an albumin test if you have swelling in the legs, feet, or abdomen, foamy urine, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or jaundice. It is also recommended for people with liver or kidney disease, malnutrition, or malabsorption, as part of a liver function test, and for monitoring nutritional status during illness.
Fasting is usually not required for an albumin test alone. However, if it is done as part of a liver function test, fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. Stay normally hydrated, as dehydration can falsely raise albumin. Inform your doctor about medicines like steroids, hormones, or insulin.
Fasting is usually not required for an albumin test alone. You can eat and drink normally before giving your sample. However, if it is ordered as part of a liver function test or with other tests that need fasting, you should fast for 8–12 hours, drinking only water. Follow your lab's instructions.
