A 2D echocardiogram (2D echo) is a non-invasive ultrasound of the heart that shows its chambers, walls, valves, and pumping function in real time, without radiation.
It measures the ejection fraction (EF), which is normally about 55–70%. A low EF indicates weak heart pumping, as in heart failure or cardiomyopathy.
A 2D echo helps detect valve disease, heart damage after a heart attack, congenital heart defects like holes in the heart, fluid around the heart, blood clots, and pulmonary hypertension.
It is also used to monitor heart disease and treatment.
You should get a 2D echo test if you have chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, swelling in the legs, fatigue, fainting, or a heart murmur. It is also recommended after a heart attack, for people with high blood pressure or diabetes, before major surgery, during pregnancy with heart concerns, and for monitoring heart disease.
No special preparation or fasting is required for a standard 2D echo test. Wear loose, comfortable two-piece clothing, avoid applying lotions on your chest, and continue your regular medicines unless advised otherwise. Bring previous heart reports or ECGs. If a transesophageal echo (TEE) is planned, you will need to fast for 4–6 hours.
No, fasting is not required for a standard 2D echo test. You can eat and drink normally and take your regular medicines before the test. However, if your doctor has planned a transesophageal echo (TEE) or a stress echo, you may need to fast for 4–6 hours. Follow your doctor's instructions.
